How to Sharpen a Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposals is a kitchen appliance used to get rid of leftover food. The blades, or impellers, are made of thin, sharp steel that create a cyclone effect to chew through food and send it down the drain with running water. Over time the blades can become a little dull and not grind quite as well. Sharpening a garbage disposal is a simple process. Plus, if the disposal has an odor, you can sharpen and deodorize it at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Place two handfuls of ice cubes and some citrus peelings into the garbage disposal. The ice cubes should fill the disposal drain about half way.

    • 2

Turn on the cold water and hold the drain stopper loosely over the drain. This allows the water to trickle into the drain while protecting your ice from melting.

    • 3

Hold the stopper with one hand and turn on the garbage disposal. Once there is no ice bouncing off the bottom of the stopper, remove it from the drain.

    • 4

Allow the disposal to run until all of the ice is gone. Turn off the disposal and the water.
