How to Make a Dishwasher Gasket

Dishwashers have a gasket that runs along a channel on the interior side of the door or front interior frame. Over time, the gasket may crack or stretch and cause the dishwasher to leak during the washing cycle. The gaskets are made of rubber and are easy to remove and replace. You can purchase rubber stripping and manufacture your own gasket as a temporary or permanent fix for your problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old gasket from your dishwasher by grasping it and pulling it out. Read your dishwasher’s owner’s manual if you are having trouble removing the gasket.

    • 2

Lay out your old gasket and measure the length and width with a measuring tape. Write down the measurements.

    • 3

Purchase rubber stripping that is the same width as your previous gasket and the same length or longer.

    • 4

Measure and mark the rubber stripping, then cut it down to the appropriate length.

    • 5

Lay the rubber stripping down along the channel from which you pulled the old gasket. If the stripping is the proper length, push it down into place along the channel. If it is too long, remove the stripping and trim it accordingly.
