How to Replace an Active Vent in a Kenmore Dishwasher

The active vent system in a Kenmore dishwasher helps reduce noise and speed drying. During wash and rinse cycles, the vent closes to keep noise and moisture inside the dishwasher. Once the drying cycle begins, the vent opens to allow moisture to escape. If the active vent stops working properly, it can allow water to leak from the dishwasher or lengthen drying times. If you need to replace an active vent in a Kenmore dishwasher, all you need is a couple of screwdrivers and a few minutes of free time.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the electrical power to the dishwasher by turning off the circuit breaker or removing the fuse. You can usually find the circuit breaker or fuse in the main electrical service panel for your home.

    • 2

Open the door of the dishwasher. Remove the six Phillips-head screws located around the top edge of the door.

    • 3

Pull the control panel away from the top of the door until you can reach the ribbon cable connector. Unplug the ribbon cable, and set the control panel aside.

    • 4

Place the blade of a flat-head screwdriver in the slot in the bottom of the vent grille. Use the screwdriver to turn the grille one-quarter turn counterclockwise. Pull the grille off the inside of the dishwasher door; the rest of the assembly will drop off the outside of the door.

    • 5

Position a new active vent assembly over the vent hole on the outside of the door. Place the grille on the inside of the door, and turn it one-quarter turn clockwise to lock the assembly in place.

    • 6

Connect the ribbon cable to the control panel. Place the control panel on the front of the door. Insert and tighten the six Phillips-head screws to hold the control panel in place.

    • 7

Turn on the electrical service to the dishwasher.
