How to Replace the Electrical Plug on a Kenmore Dishwasher

The most common method that power is provided to a permanently installed Kenmore dishwasher is through a dedicated conduit wire, which hard-wires the dishwasher to the home's electrical system. However, because a dishwasher requires a 120v power supply rather than a 240v power supply, it is possible to install a power cord, allowing you to plug the dishwasher directly into a power outlet. If an installed power cord becomes damaged, you must remove the power cord from the dishwasher and install a new one.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dishwasher from the wall outlet. If the power cord is damaged, turn off the circuit breaker before touching the power cord.

    • 2

Remove the lower front panel from the dishwasher by removing the screws securing it in place and then pulling the panel away from the dishwasher.

    • 3

Remove the terminal block cover, located on the right side of the compartment below the dishwasher. The cover is secured using a single screw, and has several warning stickers placed on it.

    • 4

Remove the wire nuts securing the dishwasher power cables to the power cord cables. Turn the wire nuts counterclockwise to remove.

    • 5

Loosen the green grounding screw, and then remove the grounding wire from the post.

    • 6

Loosen the screws on the strain relief, which secures the power cord to the terminal block. Remove and discard the power cord.

    • 7

Thread the new power cord through the strain relief and into the terminal block. Ensure that the wires easily reach the dishwasher wires, and then tighten the screws on the strain relief to hold the cord in place.

    • 8

Insert the end of the black power cord wire and the end of the black dishwasher wire into a wire nut. Twist the wire nut clockwise until tight to connect the two wires.

    • 9

Insert the end of the white power cord wire and the end of the white dishwasher wire into a wire nut. Twist the wire nut clockwise until tight to connect the two wires.

    • 10

Wrap the green or bare grounding wire around the grounding screw post, and then tighten the grounding screw.

    • 11

Replace the terminal block cover, and use the screw that was removed to secure it.

    • 12

Reinstall the lower front panel of the dishwasher.
