The Middle Sprayer Is Not Working on My GE Dishwasher

When it works properly, a sprayer arm or sprayer on a General Electric (GE) dishwasher rotates to spray water forcibly on dishes to rid them of debris and clean them. If the middle sprayer clogs or breaks, the dishwasher won’t be able to effectively clean dishes. Instead of just accepting mediocre performance from your dishwasher, investigate the problem further to see if you can address it.
  1. Alternative Sprayer Washing System

    • Certain GE dishwashers have an alternative sprayer washing system with a lower and middle sprayer. At various phases of a typical dishwashing cycle, the dishwasher automatically alternates between operating the lower and middle sprayers. Since the middle sprayer generally won’t spin until the latter phase of the cycle, you might assume that the sprayer is broken when in fact it just hasn’t come on yet. Review the manual that came with your dishwasher to determine if your dishwasher has an alternative sprayer washing system.

    Obstruction

    • Ensure that when you load your dishwasher that the dishes, pots, pans and utensils fit entirely in the dish racks. Additionally, avoid overloading your dishwasher, as this also can limit a sprayer from performing right. If something blocks the sprayer from spinning, it won’t function properly. Review the operating manual that came with your GE dishwasher for additional loading instructions.

    Filling Problem

    • Verify that water is in the tub if you find that the middle sprayer isn’t spinning toward the end of a cycle. Sometimes when a GE dishwasher has difficulty filling, it can impact the operation of its sprayers and delay or prevent them from rotating. Contact GE to have your washer serviced if you suspect your dishwasher isn’t filling properly.

    Clogged Holes

    • The typical GE dishwasher sprayer has several small holes from which water sprays. Over time, the holes can become clogged with detergent residue, grease or debris that may keep them from spraying water normally. As a result, you may find that some of your dishes aren’t clean after the dishwashing cycle ends. Also, obstructed holes can cause the sprayer to direct more water toward one area of the dishwasher than it typically would, and if the area is the door, the dishwasher can start leaking, notes GE’s website. Use a bristle brush to loosen the clog from the holes and wipe out the bottom of the tub to remove the debris from your dishwasher. Repair Clinic recommends that you periodically examine the sprayer’s holes for potential blockages and clean them as necessary.
