The Cycle Indicator on My Whirlpool Dishwasher GU980SCGQ2 Is Not Lighting

On the Whirlpool consumer dishwasher model GU980SCGQ2, the control panel features lights for the various cycle options. The lights also illuminate as the cycle progresses. If you encounter a problem with the lights not illuminating on the control panel, you can try to troubleshoot this problem on your own. Doing so may save you the expense of a repair call.
  1. Door Not Closed

    • You cannot select a cycle unless the door is securely closed. On this dishwasher model, when the door latches it makes a loud clicking noise. This noise lets you know that the door is securely closed. Pushing the cycle button before the door is fully closed will result in it not lighting because the door is open. Once the door is latched shut, the light should work once a cycle is selected.

    Cycle Not Selected

    • The cycle light will only illuminate if you have pushed one of the cycle buttons. Without selecting a cycle, the control panel remains without any lights. Try giving the cycle button a firm push until you see it light up.

    'Start' Button

    • This dishwasher has a "Start" button that must be pushed once all of the cycle options have been selected. Failing to do so clears out all of your selections and dims the lights on the control panel. If this is what has happened to you, re-select your settings and give the “Start” button a push. Once you do this, the dishwasher should come on and light up.

    Power Supply

    • If you have lost power to the dishwasher, you will not have any lights on the control panel. A power surge may have tripped the breaker or blown the fuse for the dishwasher. Take a look in your home's breaker box, or fuse box, to determine if this is the cause of your problem. If you have a tripped breaker, it needs to be reset. If you have a blown fuse, it needs to be replaced.

    Internal Component

    • If you cannot determine the cause of the problem, the control panel may have an internal component failure. If this is the case, a qualified dishwasher repair technician can run a diagnostic test on the unit for you. This test will let the technician know what is to blame for the problem so that you can get it fixed.
