My GE Dishwasher Rack Does Not Move

The GE dishwasher is designed to handle heavy cookware for thorough cleaning and sanitizing, but can become overloaded if too many items are placed in the dishwasher's racks at a time. Overloading the dishwasher can result in a stuck rack, which normally pulls out for loading or removing dishes. Care is required when troubleshooting a stuck rack, as breaking a dish or the appliance is possible when force is used.
  1. Heavy Cookware

    • Heavy cookware can be placed on the upper or lower rack, but too many heavy items stacked on the upper rack weighs it down. A weighed-down rack may appear stuck but instead prove to be simply overloaded rather than jammed. Removing one item at a time to reduce the weight helps alleviate the strain on the top rack.

    Jammed Dishes

    • A dish stuck between the upper and lower rack jams the cleaning rack and can shatter if the rack is forcibly pulled out of the dishwasher. Carefully removing the dish prevents potential damage to your dishwasher or personal injury caused by a broken dish.

    Broken Rack Adjuster

    • The adjusting device on the side of the rack allows you to raise or lower the rack. It might be unevenly aligned with the adjusting device on the opposite side of the rack. Pressing the adjusting device on both sides of the rack and carefully pulling out the rack allows you to fix the leveling problem.

    Improper Loading

    • Loading your dishes in the dishwasher requires patience to prevent an immobile rack and uneven cleaning. Lower the angled levers on your rack to prevent the rack from sticking while unloading or loading the dishwasher. Placing the dishes in the same direction reduces movement during the cleaning process, and helps prevent rack removal issues.
