My GE Dishwasher GLDA690 Arms Are Not Spinning

The GE GLDA690 is a dishwasher that uses two spinner arms to spray water inside the unit. There are a number of reasons your unit’s spinner arms may malfunction, including loss of electricity or a wiring issue. Before you call for service, make sure that it’s not something you can fix at home. Two common causes -- dishes blocking the arms or debris in the arm base -- are fixable right at home.
  1. Purpose

    • The GLDA690 has two spinner arms located inside the unit. The purpose of your dishwasher’s spinner arms is to spray water all over the racks above and below them. They don’t start spinning until after the dishwasher fills and the detergent is released into the water. After the soapy water drains, the spinner arms start turning, spraying down all the dishes in the dishwasher until they’re clean.

    Symptoms

    • If your GLDA690’s spinner arms aren’t turning during the dish cycle, you’ll notice that your dishes aren’t coming out of the machine clean. Instead, you’ll notice excess soap, food and debris of all kinds on your dishes. You may also hear thumping or whacking during the cycle if the spinner arms are trying to turn but are being prevented by something.

    Dish Blockages

    • Dishes blocking the way is one of the more common reason your GLDA690’s spinner arms aren’t turning. It’s also one of the quickest fixes because you just have reposition your dishes in the racks to get your dishwasher working normally again. Open the door and move around your dishes until your spinner arms can rotate freely. Close the door and reset the cycle to resume washing the dishes.

    Debris Blockages

    • Another reason the sprayer arms aren’t moving may be the debris has worked itself down into the base. Wait until the dishwasher has cooled down to open the door and twist the retaining nut of each arm 90 degrees. Pull off the arms and examine the base. Clean out any seeds, glass or other debris that may have worked itself into the turning mechanisms. Replace the arms and tighten the nut to make the dishwasher operable again.
