Not Enough Water in the Float of a Bosch Dishwasher

Bosch dishwashers are designed by German engineers to be quiet, dependable and energy-efficient. They are typically trouble free and can be counted on for years of dependable service. Fortunately, if a problem arises, it can be fixed by the experienced do-it-yourself homeowner. If your dishwasher is not receiving enough water to operate properly, the float or the float switch may be to blame.
  1. Float

    • All Bosch dishwashers are equipped with a float switch located underneath the dishwasher. It is connected to a small plastic cylinder, located on the inside, that floats upward as water enters the machine. If the float is dislodged or stuck, the dishwasher won't fill and the timer won't advance. If it sticks while the machine is draining, cleaning is impaired and the dishwasher cannot drain properly.

    Clean The Dishwasher

    • Inspect the float to see if debris is blocking its movement. Sticky food residue, a glass chip or built-up mineral deposits may be to blame. Wash visible food residue or mineral deposits with soapy water and an old toothbrush. To clean the inside of your dishwasher, place a large glass bowl, turned upward on the bottom rack of the dishwasher. Pour 2 to 3 cups white distilled vinegar in the bowl. Do not add additional detergent or other dishes. Run the dishwasher on the regular wash cycle.

    Timer

    • If the dishwasher is not filling correctly, you may have a defective timer that needs to be replaced. If the timer hangs up, it cuts short the filling cycle and doesn't provide adequate water to the appliance. If it is malfunctioning, kits are available for purchase online from appliance repair websites that specialize in Bosch appliance replacement parts or order from your local appliance dealer.

    Safety Recall

    • Those who have older dishwasher models may have one that has been recalled for safety concerns regarding a possible fire hazard. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Bosch Home Appliance have issued a safety recall on over 450,000 dishwashers manufactured between May 1999 and July 2005. If you own a Bosch dishwasher of this vintage, contact the Bosch Home Appliance hotline or your local appliance dealer to schedule a free repair.
