The Water Is Not Circulating in the Kenmore Elite Dishwasher

If you've ever opened up your Kenmore Elite dishwasher to see a pool of soapy water instead of the clean dishes that you were expecting, you should be looking at a couple of components. Water circulation in the dishwasher is chiefly provided by the dishwasher pump. But there is another part, called the float switch, that may also be the culprit.
  1. Elite Dishwasher Operation

    • To work properly, Elite dishwashers need three utility connections: water, electricity and sewage. The water is pulled in by the washer and mixed with soap to spray on the dishes inside the appliance. Electricity powers the pump used to push the water inside through the sprayer arm and also for sending the used water out through the drain hose into the sewer system. A heating element inside the dryer, powered by electricity, then dries the dishes inside.

    Water Circulation

    • The water circulation throughout the wash cycles inside the Elite dishwasher is provided by the dishwasher pump. A valve called a solenoid opens up to allow the water inside the appliance. When the water reaches the preset level, it triggers a float switch, which tells the machine to stop filling. The pump then switches on and pushes the water in the machine out through the spray arm. This causes the spray arm to spin inside the cabinet to help distribute the water.

    Electrical Tips

    • Turn off the electricity to the Elite dishwasher at the main circuit breaker before checking on any problems to help prevent electric shock. Either flip the switch to the off setting, or remove the fuse as needed to cut the power. Double check that the power is shut off by trying to start the dishwasher.

    Float Switch

    • The first component that you should check is the float switch, which is also the easiest to access. Open up the dishwasher and look for a tower on the floor of the cabinet. This is the cover for the float switch. Remove the cover, using a screwdriver, if needed. Gently grasp the float beneath and pull it up and down to see if it's stuck. This can sometimes cause problems with water circulation.

    Pump Problems

    • The other major component that might cause circulation problems is the dishwasher pump. If you turn on the machine but don't hear a humming noise, the problem is most likely with the pump. Remove the grill inside the washing machine and check for any objects that may be jammed in the pump blades. If the pump seems clear, it might be time to get a new one. Replacement Elite can be purchased online or from the manufacturer.
