Insulation Problems on a Dishwasher

Insulation is a necessary component of a dishwasher due to the heat and noise it generates while washing your dishes. Dishwashers come with varying levels of insulation, primarily in the door. Cheaper dishwashers typically have less insulation than higher-end units. The amount of insulation in the door affects the functionality of the dishwasher and sometimes causes problems with the unit.
  1. Noise Problems

    • The most common problem with dishwasher insulation is that there's too little of the material. If a dishwasher doesn't have an insulating barrier, all of the noise made inside the machine goes right through the door. Although not a functional problem, a loud dishwasher does annoy some people. The noise mainly affects the kitchen, where many families congregate. Noise from the dishwasher can make it difficult to have a conversation in the kitchen.

    Efficiency Problems

    • A layer of insulation helps a dishwasher retain the heat of the water while it is operating, making the appliance work more effectively. The dishwasher needs hot water to clean the dishes effectively and melt the soap. Manufacturers typically provide information about the energy efficiency of their units.

    Affects on Nearby Appliances

    • The dishwasher generates heat, either from the water itself or the heater integrated into the machine that heats the water. If your dishwasher isn't properly insulated and is right next to your refrigerator, the heat from the dishwasher can have a negative impact on the refrigerator. The heat from the dishwasher causes the refrigerator to work harder, increasing the overall energy consumption in your home.

    Tips

    • Adding insulation to the dishwasher unit can help reduce these problems. The California Energy Commission recommends placing a piece of foam insulation between the refrigerator and dishwasher if they are right next to one another. This helps reduce the heat transfer that causes the refrigerator to work overtime. You can also add soundproofing materials and insulation to the door and body of the dishwasher. Pull the dishwasher out of its accustomed place, and drape a piece of soundproofing material over it. As well, remove the front piece of the dishwasher drawer, so you can add more insulation inside the door.
