What Makes My Dishwasher Start to Fill With Water When it Is Not Running?

Properly operating dishwashers partially fill with water during the wash and rinse cycles and expel it when the process is complete and the drying stage starts. While some models have one or two cups of water that remain in the bottom of the tub during non-operation, a larger volume of standing water indicates a problem.
  1. Internal Causes

    • Lightweight lids from storage containers are often dislodged from racks by the water or air pressure inside the dishwasher. Labels from jars frequently peel off during the dishwashing or rinse cycles. These items can float to the rear of the dishwasher tub and block the sump pump, which drains the water from the machine. Removing the obstruction will alleviate the excess water problem. If you have recently replaced your garbage disposal, the problem may be the disposer plug located where the dishwasher hose connects to the disposal. This plug is factory-installed and must be removed for the water to properly drain from the dishwasher.

    External Drainage Problems

    • Water will accumulate in the dishwasher bottom if the kitchen sink is clogged. Run the garbage disposal for a few minutes while flushing it with cold water to remove the blockage. Many dishwasher systems rely on an air gap to aid in drainage. This is typically a small metal or plastic device located at the rear rim of the sink. It is designed to prevent debris from backing up into the dishwasher if the kitchen drain is clogged. If it becomes clogged with garbage or debris, it will prevent proper dishwasher drainage. You can easily remove the clog with a small piece of wire or an extended paperclip. Another possible reason for water buildup is a twisted or clogged hose that connects the dishwasher to the outside drain. Adjusting or cleaning the hose typically corrects the drainage problem. If the hose requires replacement, choose a white corrugated hose that resists kinking.

    Detergent Usage

    • Always use detergent specially formulated for dishwashers, as dishwashing liquids or laundry detergents create excess suds that most dishwashers cannot properly drain. Dishwasher detergent is formulated to clean with minimal suds and contains additives to continually clean the system and prevent soap buildup.

    Usage and Maintenance Tips

    • Anchor lightweight lids and utensils with heavier objects to keep them stable during dishwasher operation. Remove labels from jars before placing them in the machine. Don't place dishes in the dishwasher if they have heavy concentrations or large chunks of food on them that may clog the drains or hoses.
