One reason why a Whirlpool dishwasher may leak, especially at the beginning of the wash cycle, is if the dishwasher is cold and the water is very hot. Check the household water heater and lower the temperature setting if the water is more than 160 degrees Fahrenheit. The best water temperature range is between 120 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
Oversudsing is a common problem in dishwashers and may be caused by a rinse aid detergent spill or misuse of the dishwasher detergent. Do not use an excess of detergent and always use automatic dishwasher detergent. Other types of soap cause a lot of foam to build up during the wash cycle, which causes water to leak out of the dishwasher. Set the dishwasher to “Rinse Only” to rinse away and drain the extra soap and water. Repeat as needed until the dishwasher tub is empty.
When loading the dishwasher, do not leave the bottom rack empty, as this causes water to spray against the door. The water then can leak out of the door seal. Conversely, do not place large dishes such as a platter or pan on the bottom rack facing the door seal, as water can deflect off the dish and leak through the seal. Place large items on the side or rear in the bottom rack of the dishwasher and check the door seal for any debris, cracks or other damage that might allow for a leak. Contact Whirlpool if the door gasket requires replacement.
If a dishwasher is not installed evenly, water can leak out one side or the other of the unit. Make changes to the leveling legs so that the dishwasher is level and is sitting squarely in the cabinet. If the legs are not accessible or you are not certain how to check if the dishwasher is level or installed correctly, contact the dishwasher installer or Whirlpool for assistance.
