Removing the GE Dishwasher PDW9280L00SS Sump Filter

If you own a GE dishwasher, model PDW9280L00SS, and it is not draining properly, chances are your problem is no greater than a routine filter clog. That means it's time to clean out the sump filter. The sump filter is a soft plastic boot that fits in a hole in the bottom of this GE-brand dishwasher. The filter has a housing covering it that looks similar to an upside-down cage. Removing the GE dishwasher sump filter requires some disassembly of the dishwasher.
  1. Shut off Power

    • Find the circuit breaker in your home's electrical circuit breaker box that provides power to the GE dishwasher. There is usually a schematic sheet on the inside of the breaker box door that indicates which circuit breaker operates the dishwasher. Turn off the circuit breaker with your finger. Attempt to start the GE dishwasher to ensure that the power is off to the unit.

Clear Access to the Sump Filter

    • Open your GE dishwasher door. Grab the front of the bottom dish rack and pull it out of the dishwasher. Place your hands around the bottom edge of the lower spray arm plate covering the pump. Lift up and turn the plate 1/4 turn. Pull the lower spray arm out of the dishwasher. This gives you unobstructed access to the sump filter housing.

    Remove the Filter Housing

    • Look on the top of the sump filter housing for two hex head screws. There is one on each end of the housing. The screw heads are slightly countersunk. Remove each screw with a nut driver. The screws are long, but they do not pull out of the housing completely. Once the housing is loose from the dishwasher bottom, pull it out of the dishwasher.

    Remove the Sump Filter

    • The sump filter is in the hole that the housing covers. Look for four tabs on the upper lip of the sump filter. There are two tabs on each side. Compress the tabs toward the center of the sump filter with you fingers. Pull up on the filter while compressing the tabs. It might take some force to begin pulling the sump filter out of the hole.
