Removing Wands in an Amana Dishwasher

Amana dishwashers, like most dishwasher models, use spray arms, also called wands, to distribute water during operation. The wands operate like a sprinkler system, rotating and spraying water on the dishes. You can remove the wands from your Amana dishwasher if you need to replace or repair them.
  1. Preparation

    • Turn off the power to the Amana dishwasher before you begin. Open the dishwasher, and remove the bottom rack. If you have a small model, consider taking out the top rack as well, so you will have more space to work. Make sure all water is drained from the dishwasher. If the dishwasher's drainage is clogged and water is standing in it, remove the water with a wet/dry vacuum, or soak it up with towels.

    Remove the Wand

    • Locate the center cap on the dishwasher's bottom wand and remove it by turning it counterclockwise. Wiping the wand assembly dry will make it easier to turn. After you remove the cap, look to see if it has a bolt assembly inside. If it does, use a ratchet and socket set with a three-eighths drive and extension to remove the bolt. Hold the wand by each arm, and gently rock it back and forth while pulling up until the wand is free.

    Clogged Wand

    • As your Amana dishwasher operates in the rinse or wash cycles, the wand circulates to spray water on all the dishes. If the spray holes are clogged, that reduces your dishwasher's ability to clean. Clogs can come from hard water deposits such as calcium, or the want may have become covered with food prior to washing. After removing the wand, you can clean the spray holes gently with warm water, dish soap and a sponge.

    Damaged Wand

    • If the wand is damaged, you may have to replace it. To check this, first turn off your dishwasher's power source. Remove the bottom rack and pull on the wand. Also rotate it by hand. There should be little wobbling, even if you have an Amana model with a spray tower. Check the seams of the wand and ensure they are together.Separation in the seams can cause a leakage in your dishwasher.
