How to Troubleshoot a Whirlpool Dishwasher That Won't Latch Properly and Is Stuck on Two Minutes

The Whirlpool dishwasher's door latch locks when a cycle is currently in progress because the latch is a safety feature that prevents unintentionally opening the door while the dishwasher is filled with water. The door remains locked if your dishwasher experiences an error during operation and freezes. This requires a manual reset and drain to restore use of the dishwasher and unlock the door's latch. Persistent lockup or performance issues require professional repair because an issue with the dishwasher's circuit board may exist.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the dishwasher out from its counter area and check its power connection. A loose power cord can affect the cycle and require plugging the diswasher's power cord into an alternate grounded outlet.

    • 2

Reset your home's circuit breaker. A power surge disrupts the dishwasher's cleaning cycle. To restart, turn your circuit breaker's power switch off and on. The circuit breaker is typically located in the utility closet or basement of your home and controls all power outlets.

    • 3

Press "Lock" on the front of the dishwasher's control panel for three seconds. The lock feature may have been accidentally enabled, which results in an unresponsive dishwasher.

Push "Cancel/Drain" and wait for the load's water to drain out of the dishwasher before opening the door. Unplug the dishwasher for one minute and plug it back into the power outlet, if the door remains locked.
