How to Troubleshoot a Kenmore Dishwasher That Has a Lack of Pressure to the Upper Spinner

Kenmore dishwashers have several spray arms to adequately clean dishes. The pump sends water up the water supply tube on the rear of the dishwasher at a high rate of pressure, forcing the water to spray out of the spray arms and spin the arms. The dishwasher has a food chopper installed below the filter assembly to prevents food from blocking the pump and reducing the amount of water flowing to it. The water pressure drops when the pump doesn't receive an adequate supply of water. To restore the water pressure to the upper spray arms, you must disassemble the dishwasher and clear the blockage from the pump. You may need to replace the food chopper.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the dishwasher breaker in your home's service panel. If you're uncertain which circuit controls the dishwasher, turn off the main power supply.

    • 2

Open the dishwasher door and remove the lower dish rack.

    • 3

Lift the tab on the water supply tube, just behind the lower wash arm. Rotate the lower wash arm assembly clockwise and remove the assembly.

    • 4

Remove the screws from the top of the filter assembly and remove the assembly.

    • 5

Take out the single screw securing the foreign object protector at the front of the lower filter assembly, then remove the object protector.

    • 6

Remove the pump inlet protector to the left of the foreign object protector, using a screwdriver to take out the single screw.

    • 7

Clean away any food buildup from the sump pump housing, using a scrub brush or cloth.

    • 8

Remove the chopper blade by inserting a flat-head screwdriver behind the blade and prying it away from the impeller.

    • 9

Wipe up and discard any food pieces you find behind the food chopper and inside of the sump pump.

    • 10

Reinstall the food chopper if it's still intact or install a new food chopper by aligning the central pin on the rear of the chopper with the motor impeller, using a flat-head screwdriver. Press the food chopper into position.

    • 11

Reassemble the dishwasher by reversing the steps taken to remove each component.

    • 12

      Replace the lower dish rack.

    • 13

Restore the dishwasher's power supply to complete the repair.
