How to Connect a Dishwasher With 2 Drains

If you're worried your drainage system is struggling to cope with the amount of wastewater you're sending its way, consider investing in an additional clean wastewater disposal system. Once you've done so, you can split the drainage outlet from your dishwasher to divide its wastewater between your two drains. All you'll need is an affordable "Y" connector and five minutes to fit it.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 pieces of drainage hose
  • "Y" connector
  • Three Jubilee clips
  • Flat-headed screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect your washer from its power source.

    • 2

Purchase a purpose-made dishwasher drain "Y" connector from your local hardware store or online. You'll also need to pick up three Jubilee clips if your connector doesn't come with its own.

    • 3

Insert the inlet of your "Y" connector into the end of your washer's drainage hose. Then, secure a Jubilee clip around the end of your machine's hose and the inlet of your connector. You can do this by tightening the clip's screw with a screwdriver.

    • 4

Connect two pieces of drainage hose to the two outlets of the "Y" connector in the same fashion, using Jubilee clips to hold them in place.

    • 5

Run the two drainage pipes to your drains. You might need additional Jubilee clips to secure them, depending on the drainage system you're using. If you're using a sink drain trap, connect one drainage hose to its inlet in the same way you hooked up your washer's drainage hose to your "Y" connector. If you're using a waste pipe, push your drainage hose over the open end of your pipe, and secure it with a Jubilee clip.
