Locate the air vent cap located on your sink and unscrew the cap to remove it from the air vent.
Inspect the inside of the air vent to look for a clog, including bits of food or other particles that are stuck in the vent's hose.
Place a paper towel roll over the open air vent and blow into the roll with your mouth. The pressure should dislodge any small clogs.
Use a scrubbing brush to dislodge large clogs that were removed from performing the previous method.
Run your dishwasher on a normal cylce and watch the air vent during the cycle to see if the problem of overflowing still occurs.
Unfasten the air vent by the sink using an adjustable wrench if clogging or overflowing in your dishwasher persists.
Lift out the metal vent part out from the sink by disconnecting the two hoses attached to it, and then inspect the part for any damage, such as cracks.
Replace the part if it is damaged by reconnecting the two hoses to the bottom of the new air vent part.
Slide the air vent part back down into the hole within the top of the sink, and then tighten the part with an adjustable wrench.
Press the cap back down onto the air vent and run the dishwasher again to see if the problem continue. Contact a dishwasher repair specialist if the dishwasher continues to flood.
