How to Install the Black Flaps on a Dishwasher

The black flaps on a dishwasher are rubber seals called gaskets. These gaskets keep water from leaking out of the machine while it is in use, and it's important to change them as needed. Different machines have different types of gaskets. Some are wide and on the dishwasher opening. Others are small and on the door. Gaskets can be maintained by washing them and applying petroleum jelly to keep them soft and flexible. But if your gasket is too worn to be used anymore, replacing it is easy.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement gasket
  • Replacement hardware -- optional

Instructions

  1. Stainless Steel or Plastic Dishwasher

    • 1

Find the white line on the gasket. This is the center line.

    • 2

Position the white line at the top of the dishwasher opening so it is centered in the middle, with the flanged edge facing into the dishwasher.

    • 3

Press the gasket into the groove around the edge of the opening. Insert the gasket all the way around the opening into the grooved area. Smooth the gasket with your fingers as you work, but do not pull or stretch it.

    • 4

Insert the wire for the gasket into the tail end so the "V"-shaped end is pointed up. Not all dishwashers have wire with the gasket.

    • 5

Position the gasket tail and wire under the door, and bring the wire across to the opposite tail. Insert the wire into the gasket tail so the "V" is pointed up.

Plastic Dishwasher With Gaskets on the Door

    • 6

Remove the lower rack from the dishwasher.

    • 7

Find the center of the gasket by locating the slot.

    • 8

Press the gasket into the top center of the door, and continue pressing around both sides until it is snugly in position.

    • 9

Position the gasket into the slot under the door by feeling where it goes with your hand. Ensure that the gasket is snugly in position. The two ends do not always touch each other under the door.
