How to Repair a KitchenAid Dishwasher Model KUDS24SE Shaft

The KitchenAid Dishwasher Model KUDS24SE was manufactured by the Whirlpool Corp. and sold through KitchenAid. Although this appliance is no longer being produced, you can still find models in operation all over the country. The plastic shaft on these dishwashers holds the washer arm, which distributes water during the cleaning and rinse cycles. Because the shaft itself is relatively inexpensive, the best repair method is simply to replace a worn-out shaft with a new one.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • New dishwasher shaft

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the power for the dishwasher at the main circuit breaker by moving the switch that controls the dishwasher circuit to the "Off" setting.

    • 2

Turn off the water supply for the Kitchenaid dishwasher at the water supply valve. In most residential installations, this will be underneath the nearest sink.

    • 3

Open the dishwasher door and remove the lower dishwasher rack. While the door is open, loosen the screws at the top of the kick panel in between the open dishwasher door and the dishwasher cabinet frame.

    • 4

Pry the cap off the top of the washer arm with the edge of a flat-blade screwdriver. Loosen the bolt inside with a socket wrench. Pull the arm straight up and off the washer shaft.

    • 5

Insert the edge of the flat-blade screwdriver between the plastic plate around the shaft and the bottom of the dishwasher cabinet. Gently snap the plate out of place.

    • 6

Loosen the four bolts holding the upper part of the impeller in place inside the pump housing. Pull the top half of the pump off of the pump assembly.

    • 7

Loosen the screws holding the oval sump pump cover in place in the center of the pump assembly. Pull the cover up and out of the pump body.

    • 8

Slide the plastic impeller shaft up and off of the pump motor hub. Replace with a new impeller shaft. Replace the sump assembly cover and secure it with the screws.

    • 9

Replace the top half of the pump assembly and tighten the bolts. Snap the plastic impeller plate back into place around the shaft assembly.

    • 10

Replace the washer arm. Secure with the washer arm bolt. Snap the cap back into the top of the shaft. Replace the lower dishwasher rack.

    • 11

Turn on the water supply for the dishwasher, followed by the power supply.
