How to Test Hall Sensors in LG Dishwashers

If you own an LG dishwasher, you may experience an "LE" error code, which indicates a problem with the motor. Sometimes the cause is the motion hall sensor, which is attached to the motor and helps determine its speed and direction. If your LG dishwasher is no longer under warranty, you could incur repair costs to have it fixed by a professional. Fortunately, there’s a way to troubleshoot the hall sensor and replace it if needed instead of replacing the entire motor assembly.

      Unplug the power cord. Take off the rear panel of the dishwasher, using either a flat-head or a Phillips screwdriver; which one will depend on the LG dishwasher model you have.

      Locate the motor assembly, which should be toward the bottom of the dishwasher.

      Find the stator on the motor and disconnect the five-pin hall sensor connector. The first pin receptacle is red, and the last one is white.

      Set your multimeter to the ohms rating, and plug in the red and black multimeter leads.

      Put one lead on pin 5 and another on pin 1 simultaneously. The reading should be around 10K ohms. Repeat for pins 5 to 4 and 5 to 2. If you get no reading at all or the reading is above 10K ohms, you will need to replace the hall sensor. If you get a proper reading, continue to Step 6.

      Place the leads in pins 5 to 4. Plug the dishwasher back in and press the power button, but don’t start the dishwasher. You should get a reading of 10 to 15 volts DC. If you don't, you need to replace the control board.

      Put the multimeter on the voltage setting. Insert the leads in pins 4 to 1, then slowly rotate the motor by hand. If you receive at least 10 volts DC pulsing off and on, place the leads in pins 4 to 2 and repeat. If either reading is only 9 to 10 volts DC with no pulsing, you will need to change the hall sensor.
