My Kenmore Dishwasher's Float Is Stuck and Overflows

The dishwasher float maintains the water level at the bottom of the dishwasher. This helps the dishwasher mix soap at proper proportions and also prevents overflow. While the float is connected to a mechanical or digital regulator, the float itself is a simple piece of equipment that can malfunction for several reasons.
  1. Physical Imposition

    • One of the most common reasons a dishwasher float will not work is an object physically blocking its ability to rise. Physical impositions of the dishwasher float are either temporary, such as pot handles that dip below the bottom of the wash rack, or permanent such as debris or heavy food particles. If the problem is temporary, ensure the dishes are all placed entirely above the dishwasher rack. If the overflow happens even during an empty wash, check the float assembly for debris. Dried debris can find its way underneath the float cover, preventing the float from rising. Remove any debris and ensure the float rises and falls easily before attempting another wash.

    Switch Error

    • Although the float sits above the wash tub wall, it leads to a float switch assembly that detects the float’s level, closing the water inlet valve when the water reaches the proper level. When this switch malfunctions, it runs the water from the inlet valve uninterrupted. In this case, overflow will happen before the dishwasher cycle begins, during initial filling. The dishwasher float switch is not a repairable part and, like the float above it, requires replacement. Contact a professional service person for replacement.

    Damage

    • The float will occasionally incur misalignment, warping and even permanent damage. Examine the dishwasher float for misalignment, bends or breakage. Repair is not an option for warped or broken dishwasher floats; instead, replace the unit with a compatible part from the manufacturer. If the float is simply misaligned, contact a repair professional for further information.

    Other Reasons for Overflow

    • Even if the floater is responding normally to the amount of water in the washtub, other possible factors are responsible for overflow. A fault in the timer can cause intermittent activation of the water inlet valve, while problems with the detergent will cause overflow and leaks out of the sides and bottom of the washer during the wash cycle. Unless the cause is obvious, contact a service professional for a full diagnostic before attempting possibly costly repairs.
