How to Hook Up the Electrical Wiring for a Dishwasher

Dishwashers are subject to heavy use in a busy kitchen and typically installed under a counter near the kitchen sink for easy access. Although the back and sides are not visible, they actually have hidden electrical and plumbing connections. When installing a new dishwasher, connecting the electrical wiring is a critical step. Dishwasher wiring is similar to other household appliances and connect in the same way as well. The main difference is ensuring that the wires are not crushed by the weight of the appliance.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify that the electrical power to the kitchen is turned off at the main fuse box.

    • 2

Examine the base of the dishwasher by tilting it backward slightly with the help of an assistant. Locate the two hollow channels that run on the bottom sides of it, which is where the plumbing and electrical wires are located. Read the owner’s manual to identify the one for the electrical wires.

    • 3

Measure the distance from the edge of the dishwasher to the electrical wiring channel and then transfer this measurement onto the floor with a pencil.

    • 4

Pull the electrical wires up along the pencil line and tape them in place with painter’s tape. The exposed ends of the wires should face toward the front of the installation area.

    • 5

Push the dishwasher into position, making sure the taped wires slide in the hollow lower channel.

    • 6

Insert a round, metal cable clamp over the wires and insert the end of the clamp and the wires through the round hole on the side of the dishwasher junction box, located on the front bottom of the unit.

    • 7

Loosen the screw, shaped like a star, on the side of the clamp with a slotted screwdriver. Push the threaded end of the clamp through the hole then re-tighten the star screw to secure the clamp to the box.

    • 8

Wrap the ends of the two white wires together and insert a plastic wire cap on top of them. Turn the wire cap clockwise three to four turns. Connect the two black wires to each other in the same manner then connect the two green wires together.

    • 9

Proceed with the remainder of the dishwasher installation.
