Dishwasher Overfill Problems

Like other appliances in your kitchen, a dishwasher has numerous working components that allow the unit to complete a cycle from the initial filling of water to drying. If a dishwasher experiences problems during operation, such as overfilling, it is often due to the malfunction of one of those components.
  1. Overfill Problems

    • Overfill problems in a dishwasher commonly stem from one of two areas. The first area is the float switch, which is supposed to move as the dishwasher fills with water, preventing it from filling with more water than it can handle. The second area of the dishwasher that may be responsible for overfill problems is the pump, which directs the water into the unit. If either of these components break, you should have them repaired or replaced by a service person.

    Leaks

    • The main issue that you can expect if a dishwasher has overfill problems is leaks. These leaks may occur as the dishwasher is filling with water at the beginning of the wash cycle, or during the cycle as the water is moving around inside the unit. Leaks are not always due to overfill problems, however. Leaks may also be caused by loose or broken seals on the dishwasher door.

    Improper Draining

    • Another possible issue that may occur if a dishwasher has overfill problems is bad drainage. If too much water goes into the unit during the wash cycle, the water may fail to completely drain from the unit at cycle’s end. If this occurs because of overfill problems, you must fix the component responsible for the overfill problem to correct the issue. Like leaks, improper draining may not be due to overfill problems, though. Bad drainage may be caused by a blocked drain.

    Other Possible Causes

    • A dishwasher that leaks or doesn’t drain well may appear to overfill even when it actually fills correctly, due to some common errors. When loading the dishwasher, be sure to use a soap labeled for dishwashers, and use only the amount recommended by the packaging. Adding too much soap to a dishwasher, or too much rinse aid, may cause the dishwasher to create too many bubbles, which can cause leaks and bad drainage just like an overfill.
