Humming Noises in a GE Potscrubber Dishwasher

The GE Potscrubber dishwasher is no longer manufactured by General Electric, which can make servicing the unit more difficult than some active appliance models. While many service technicians are able to provide service and repair for these dishwashers, many possible issues that might arise can also be fixed through some user troubleshooting efforts, such as if the dishwasher is making a humming noise.
  1. Normal Noises

    • Some sounds are to be expected as the Potscrubber dishwasher functions, including some humming. This sound may be due to the food disposal shredding food, the drain valve opening or closing, or water as it enters or exits the dishwasher tub. As long as the humming sound is quiet and relatively short lived in duration, there is usually no cause for concern.

    Motor Hums

    • The motor is often responsible for a humming sound as it turns on and off regularly throughout the dishwashing cycle. The sound should be a quiet one and should only last a few minutes, but will repeat several times over the course of the cycle. In addition, the fan that keeps the main pump motor cool may sound like a hum when operating, and this is also a normal noise.

    Recent Use

    • If the dishwasher has not been used recently, a humming sound might be more noticeable as the seals relubricate for the first time after becoming dry during the period of non-use. This sound is more likely to occur during the first part of the cycle as the dishwasher warms up, and should not be extremely loud. Use the dishwasher at least once a week to help keep these seals moist.

    Repair

    • Various components of the dishwasher may eventually wear out or break over time, and may make noise as this occurs. This kind of hum is much louder and can be sudden, such as if the water inlet valve is failing or if the heating fan or motor bearings are wearing out. Any time the hum is very loud, or occurs at a new point in the cycle, contacting GE for service is recommended.
