How to Add Tri-Sodium Phosphate to Dishwashers

Phosphates are an effective cleaning compound. However, in large amounts they pollute the environment and stimulate algae blooms that rob fish of the oxygen they need to survive. Consequently, on July 1, 2010, manufacturers began taking the phosphates out of their detergent formulas. Unfortunately, many dishwashers don't clean as effectively without phosphates. According to National Public Radio, homeowners are now putting phosphates back into their detergents themselves. A little tri-sodium phosphate will enhance the cleaning power of your phosphate-free detergent and bring the sparkle back to your dishes.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill your washing machine's detergent reservoir with automatic dish washing detergent to just below the fill line.

    • 2

Add 1/4 teaspoon of tri-sodium phosphate on top of the detergent.

    • 3

Close the lid of the detergent dispenser. You want the tri-sodium phosphate and detergent to dispense at the same time in the wash cycle.

    • 4

Run the dishwasher as usual with a full load.

    • 5

Inspect the dishes. If they are not as clean as desired, increase the amount of tri-sodium phosphate by 1/4-teaspoon on the next load. Stop increasing the amount once your dishes come out sparkling clean.
