How to Replace the Thermal Cutoff on a Dishwasher

The thermal fuse in a dishwasher is in the control panel and is clipped to the side of the control board. The purpose of the thermal fuse is to protect the dishwasher from overheating. If the fuse detects an unsafe temperature, it trips, cutting power to the dishwasher's control board. The fuse cannot be reset. Instead, it must be removed from the dishwasher and a new fuse installed in its place.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the dishwasher breaker in the home's service panel.

    • 2

Open the dishwasher door and remove the screws from the top of the inner door panel, securing the control panel to the dishwasher door.

    • 3

Close the dishwasher door and tilt the control panel toward you.

    • 4

Remove the control board cover, if applicable, by removing the screws securing it in place. On some models, the cover may be secured by tabs instead of screws. If tabs are present, depress the tabs to remove the cover.

    • 5

Find the thermal fuse, which is clipped to the side of the control board and has two wires connected to it.

    • 6

Cut the two wires as close to the fuse as possible.

    • 7

Pry up the tabs securing the thermal fuse to the control board and remove the thermal fuse.

    • 8

Strip 1/4 inch of shielding off the two wires that were clipped.

    • 9

Connect the wires to the terminal block of the new thermal fuse by inserting each wire into the block and then tightening the screws on the top of the block. If there is no terminal block, use wire nuts to connect the wires.

    • 10

Slide the heat shield onto the fuse, if included, and snap the new fuse onto the side of the control board.

    • 11

Secure the wires using zip ties, if necessary.

    • 12

Replace the control board cover and then align the control panel with the door. Use the screws to secure the control panel to the door.

    • 13

Close the dishwasher door and turn on the dishwasher breaker.
