GE Dishwasher Smart Dispense Troubleshooting

GE dishwashers with “Smart Dispense” technology have a built-in automatic dishwasher detergent dispenser that holds up to a full bottle of detergent in a reservoir. The dishwasher automatically releases a pre-determined amount of soap for each dish load until the reservoir is empty. If owners experience difficulty with the Smart Dispense detergent dispenser, some troubleshooting might be useful.

Instructions

    • 1

Push down and unscrew the Smart Dispense detergent cap in a counterclockwise motion to remove, if the LED “Low Detergent” light is illuminated. Refill the detergent dispenser with up to 45 ounces of liquid automatic dishwasher detergent. Do not use liquid dishwashing detergent meant for hand washing dishes. Close the cap in a clockwise direction until secure.

    • 2

Run three additional dish load cycles after the “Low Indicator” light comes on, if the dispenser is not releasing detergent correctly, which is typically caused by mixing two types of dishwashing detergent together in the dispenser. Do not mix enzyme- and bleach-based detergents together.

    • 3

Add automatic dishwashing detergent to the manual detergent dispenser for 10 wash loads, once the Smart Dispense dispenser is empty to thoroughly empty and rinse out the detergent reservoir.

    • 4

Refill the Smart Dispense reservoir with one type of liquid detergent until full.

    • 5

Close the dishwasher door to turn off the “Low Detergent” light. If the light remains on after the door has been shut, press and hold “Added Heat,” five times quickly.
