Checking the drain grate, before running the dishwasher, helps ensure water will pump out of the Maytag properly, and your dishes will come out clean. Remove the grate and filter periodically to clean the parts for more efficient operation.

  Release the latch on the Maytag dishwasher's door and lower it. This stops the appliance automatically.

  Pull the bottom rack out of the dishwasher so it is over the door.

  Turn the round drain grate counterclockwise and lift it straight up to remove it from the dishwasher. Do not tip the grate or you may spill food particles into the dishwasher.

  Pull out the filter underneath the drain grate.

  Wash the filter and drain grate under cold water in the sink. Scrubbing the components with an old toothbrush helps remove encrusted particles.   Push the filter into its compartment and replace the drain cover, twisting it clockwise to lock it in place.
