Release the latch on the Maytag dishwasher's door and lower it. This stops the appliance automatically.
Pull the bottom rack out of the dishwasher so it is over the door.
Turn the round drain grate counterclockwise and lift it straight up to remove it from the dishwasher. Do not tip the grate or you may spill food particles into the dishwasher.
Pull out the filter underneath the drain grate.
Wash the filter and drain grate under cold water in the sink. Scrubbing the components with an old toothbrush helps remove encrusted particles. Pouring lemon juice on the parts, while cleaning, gives them a fresher smell and helps reduce odors inside the appliance, especially if you do not run the Maytag every day.
Push the filter into its compartment and replace the drain cover, twisting it clockwise to lock it in place.
Slide the lower rack inside the Maytag and raise the door to close it.
