How to Change Heater Coil in Kitchenaid Dishwasher

The heater coil inside the bottom of a KitchenAid dishwasher maintains water temperature during the wash cycle and activates during the powered dry cycle to dry dishes faster. Like any electrical heating element, the part inside your KitchenAid may eventually wear out and stop working. Replacing the element yourself saves money over a service call. New heating elements are available from appliance repair stores and online. Follow all safety precautions when working on your KitchenAid appliance.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity to the KitchenAid at the household circuit-breaker box.

    • 2

Remove the screws on the left and right edges of the access panel at the bottom front of the KitchenAid to take off the panel. Save your hardware.

    • 3

Open and lower the KitchenAid door to pull out the bottom wash rack. Locate the two points where the heater coil enters the bottom of the dishwasher.

    • 4

Pull off the two wires attached to the two connectors underneath the KitchenAid, behind the access panel, where the heater coil connects. Pull the metal clips off the heating element connectors, not the actual wires, which may break. Write down which wire connects to which of the two connectors.

    • 5

Unscrew and remove the nuts and washers holding the two heater coil connectors to the underside of the KitchenAid, using an adjustable wrench. Save these parts.

    • 6

Lift the heater coil from inside the KitchenAid and remove the part.

    • 7

Align the terminal posts on the new heater coil with the two holes inside the bottom of the appliance and push down to seat the part. Side the rings on the coil over each opening in the bottom of the cabinet.

    • 8

Replace the washers and nuts on the threaded connectors underneath the KitchenAid and tighten the nuts with the wrench to secure the new heater coil.

    • 9

Slip the connector on each wire back onto its respective post on the heater coil.

    • 10

Re-attach the access plate with screws.

    • 11

Close the KitchenAid door before switching on the power at the breaker box.
