How to Remove Mineral Build Up in Your Dishwasher

Minerals in your water create what is known as hard water. Two of these minerals in particular, calcium and magnesium, cause buildup and, while they're not harmful to your health, they can be problematic for appliances as they create calcification and leave deposits. Hard water minerals make themselves especially apparent in your dishwasher. They accumulate on the racks and arms of the dishwasher and at times leave residue on dishes, particularly glassware. Using a basic household item to clean your dishwasher will make it as good as new.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bowl with 1 cup of plain white vinegar and place it in the bottom rack of the dishwasher.

    • 2

Run a complete cycle with nothing else in the dishwasher. The acid in the vinegar helps remove mineral buildup.

    • 3

Scrub any remaining areas of buildup with a sponge soaked in vinegar. Get into cracks and crevices with a toothbrush.
