How to Replace the Heating Element in a Kenmore Gold Series Dishwasher

Whirlpool manufactures a Gold Series line of appliances, including dishwashers. Some of these appliances are sold at Sears under the retail store's Kenmore brand name. The dishwasher heating element inside the appliance holds the water temperature steady for cleaning dishes thoroughly and also activates during the drying cycle. A burned-out element will cause the dishwasher to stop working properly. Fortunately, you can change the part yourself to save money on a repair bill. Replacement elements are available at appliance stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity to the dishwasher, either by unplugging the power cord in the adjacent cabinet or by turning off the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Extract the screws on the edges of the bottom panel on the front of the appliance. Pull off the panel.

    • 3

Open and lower the dishwasher door to slide out and remove the lower rack, which lifts out. Make a note of where the two posts on the end of the heating element enter the inside bottom of the appliance.

    • 4

Pull off the two wires connected to the heating element underneath the appliance behind the front plate. These wires have push-on clips that slide on and off the metal posts on the heating element.

    • 5

Unscrew and remove the nuts and rubber washers on the two heating element posts underneath the appliance using the wrench. You can now remove the element from inside the dishwasher. Lift the part straight up and remove.

    • 6

Lower the new element into position with the two prongs inserting into the two holes inside the bottom of the appliance.

    • 7

Attach the washers and nuts to the element posts under the appliance, and tighten each with the wrench.

    • 8

Push the clip on the end of each wire onto the two posts for the heating element. Each wire should connect to the same post as it was attached to the previous heating element.

    • 9

Place the bottom panel in position, and secure it with the screws.

    • 10

Replace the dish rack, and close the appliance door.

    • 11

      Turn on the electricity.
