How to Keep Silverware From Getting Rust in the Dishwasher

When silverware develops rust after washing in the dishwasher, users might despair as to how to prevent the problem from happening in the future. While hand washing may be the best solution to preventing silver items from rusting, there are several steps that may help reduce or prevent the development of rust on the silver items when washed in the dishwasher.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep the silver items separate from other metal items in the dishwasher utensil basket. When metal rubs on silver, additional rusting or discoloration may occur.

    • 2

Use a non-citrus-based detergent, as the citric acid is corrosive and may cause rusting. Find a scent-free detergent and use only the minimum amount necessary to clean the dishes and silver. Use a liquid detergent instead of a powder-based detergent.

    • 3

Set the dishwasher to a heated dry cycle so that the silverware dries before it has time to oxidize while wet.

    • 4

Remove the silver immediately once the dishwasher is done and wipe each piece dry with a towel.

    • 5

Wash silver items immediately or run a rinse cycle, as sitting in the dishwasher for a prolonged time period and exposure to acidic, salty or sulfide-based foods such as eggs, seafood and mayonnaise may cause damage to the silver.
