How to Install a Sears Dishwasher Heating Element

Sears dishwashers contain a square-shaped heating element that connects through the bottom of the appliance's interior to electrical wires underneath. The element maintains the water at a temperature hot enough to dissolve detergent and get dishes clean. It also switches on during the dry cycle. Like the element in a stove, the dishwasher heating element may burn out after repeated use. Replacing the element yourself typically takes less than an hour to do and saves money over calling an appliance company to send a repair technician.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the circuit breaker that controls your Sears dishwasher at the household service panel.

    • 2

Remove the screws on the sides of the bottom front grille on the appliance. Pull off this part to locate the two wires that connect to the terminals on the end of the heating element.

    • 3

Grip the clip at the end of each wire and pull straight down to release it from the element.

    • 4

Twist the nut on each element terminal counterclockwise with an adjustable wrench to loosen and remove it. Slide off the rubber gaskets as well. Save these parts

    • 5

Open the appliance door and pull the lower rack forward. Lift the old heating element from the inside of the appliance and pull it loose from the two holes in the bottom.

    • 6

Place the new element in position and lower it so the two terminals enter the two holes in the bottom. Slide the cone on each terminal down so it fits snugly over each hole.

    • 7

Push in the bottom rack and raise the door to close the appliance.

    • 8

Place the rubber gaskets and a threaded nut on each terminal below the dishwasher. Tighten the nuts with the wrench.

    • 9

Slide the clips on the two wires onto the two terminals. Each wire clips onto the corresponding terminal as with the old element.

    • 10

Fasten the grille to the front of the appliance with its screws.

    • 11

Flip on the circuit breaker for the dishwasher.
