How to Remove the Drain Line in a Whirlpool Dishwasher

The drain line in a Whirlpool dishwasher provides an exit for all the used dishwater inside the appliance. One end of the drain line connects to the dishwasher pump while the other connects to the disposal or tailpiece underneath the sink. Removing the drain line from a Whirlpool dishwasher isn't hard to do, and there are no specialized plumbing tools required.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to your Whirlpool dishwasher. Find the main circuit breaker in your house, open it and move the breaker that controls the dishwasher to the "Off" position.

    • 2

Remove the kick panel from the bottom of your Whirlpool dishwasher. The panel is held in place by screws on the sides. There may also be screws on the top that will need to be removed. These can be accessed by opening the dishwasher door.

    • 3

Place a towel on the floor underneath the dishwasher. Look for the dishwasher drain pump, which protrudes a few inches out of the center of the underside of the cabinet. One end of the dishwasher drain line is connected to this pump.

    • 4

Loosen the hose clamp that holds the drain line in place. Pull the drain line off of the pump. Mop up any excess water with the towel.

    • 5

Follow the dishwasher line back to where it connects at the sink. Remove any clamps along the way that are holding the line in place.

    • 6

Remove the hose clamp at the other end of the dishwasher. Pull out the hose where it connects to the tailpiece or garbage disposal.
