How to Remove the Drain Basket From a Whirlpool Dishwasher

Whirlpool dishwashers contain a drain basket in the interior bottom that strains food particles to prevent them from flowing into the drain pump and clogging the appliance or the pipes in the kitchen. The basket must be removed and cleaned periodically to remove decaying particles that can cause odors and may prevent the appliance from draining properly. Taking out the drain basket takes less than a minute. No tools are needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Unlock the door latch on the Whirlpool dishwasher and lower the door.

    • 2

Pull the lower wash rack forward to locate the drain basket inside the bottom, below the rotating washer arm.

    • 3

Twist the basket one-half turn to the left and lift the part out of the appliance. Be careful not to spill any waste caught in the basket strainer, which should be dumped in a garbage can.
