How to Attach the Electrical Components of a Dishwasher

The electrical components of a dishwasher receive their power from a single 120-volt electrical cord that plugs into an outlet under the sink. However, many dishwashers require that you connect the electrical cord to the terminal lug screws on the back. It is important to connect the hot, neutral and ground wires to the proper lugs so that the electronic panel functions properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the terminal lugs on the back of the dishwasher to which the wiring for the electrical cord connects. On some models, you must remove an access panel using a Phillips screwdriver or nut driver in order to expose the terminal lugs.

    • 2

Insert the wire end of the electrical cord through the access panel and push the panel up the cord so it is out of the way. Trace the side of the cord from the small prong on the plug to the end of the cord with the individual wires. This wire is the hot lead, the other wire is neutral and the green or copper wire is the ground.

    • 3

Loosen the three terminal lugs using a nut driver or Phillips screwdriver, depending on the type your dishwasher contains.

    • 4

Strip 2 inches of insulation off the end of each wire using wire strippers, if the wires are not already stripped.

    • 5

Wrap the hot wire clockwise around the lug that is designated as hot. If there is not a designation, wrap the wire around the lug that is brass-colored. Tighten the lug using either a Phillips screwdriver or nut driver. Wrap the neutral wire around the silver-colored lug or the one designated as neutral or common. Tighten the neutral lug. Wrap the ground wire around the remaining lug and tighten it.

Pull the access panel forward and secure it to the back of the dishwasher with its screws.
