How to Get White Residue Off Dishes in the Dishwasher

Over time, hard water can cause a white residue to develop in appliances, and even on dishes washed in a dishwasher. If hard water is a persistent problem, consider installing a water softener to reduce the mineral content in the water supply. In the meantime, there are several techniques that can help remove the white residue from the dishwasher tub and dishes.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Use more automatic dishwasher detergent in the dispenser than usual. Fill the detergent dispenser to the “Max” fill line every time the dishwasher is used.

    • 2

Add rinse aid to the rinse aid dispenser, which will help remove the white residue from dishes and glasses. Fill the rinse aid dispenser to the “Max” fill line for every wash cycle.

    • 3

Select warm or hot water wash temperatures such as “High Temp” or “Sani Rinse” for improved rinsing during the wash cycle. Run hot water at the sink for 30 seconds before you run the dishwasher. Raise the temperature of the household water heater to between 120 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 4

Clean the filter in the dishwasher at least once a month.

    • 5

Remove all metal items and silverware from the dishwasher. Pour 2 cups of white vinegar into a bowl or glass measuring cup, and place the cup or bowl in the bottom rack. Start a normal wash cycle without detergent, and use an “Air Dry” option. Repeat as necessary until the white residue is removed. Alternatively, run a normal wash cycle with 1 to 3 tbsp. of citric acid crystals instead of vinegar. Do not add detergent.
