DIY Coating for a Rusted Dishwasher Rack

Dishwashers are subject to constantly damp conditions even when not in use. Although the interior racks contain a plastic water-resistant coating, the coating can scratch and chip over time. This leaves the underlying metal exposed, which results in rust. Since this is a common problem, manufacturers sell a variety of do-it-yourself coatings that homeowners can apply to seal the rust and return the racks to an attractive condition. Before sealing the racks, you must remove as much of the rust as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door to the dishwasher and remove the racks by pulling them straight out of the front of the appliance.

    • 2

Move the rusty racks to an outdoor location or to a garage. Set them on top of newspaper to protect the ground or underlying surface. Put on safety glass and work gloves before beginning the repair process.

    • 3

Scrub all surfaces of the dishwasher racks thoroughly using a wire brush to dislodge the rust from them. Continue scrubbing vigorously until the metal is shiny and no more red or brown color remains.

    • 4

Wipe down all surfaces of the rack using a tack cloth to collect any remaining rust particles or metal shavings.

    • 5

Open a spray can or a bottle of dishwasher vinyl repair paint in a color that matches your dishwasher rack. Spray the paint on until it covers all surfaces or paint it on using a paintbrush if it is in a bottle.

    • 6

Wait until the rack dries and then turn it over and paint any areas on the bottom of the rack in the same manner.

    • 7

Turn the rack right side up and insert new dishwasher rack caps on any exposed metal tines.
