My Dishwasher Is Not Running

Although dishwashers are fairly simple appliances, a number of issues can cause them to malfunction. If your machine isn't working and your dirty dishes are piling up, there are a number of steps you take to troubleshoot the possible source of your problem and get your dishwasher running again.
  1. Power

    • Make sure your dishwasher is receiving power. If your dishwasher plugs into the wall, turn its power socket on, and check that its fuse hasn't blown. If your machine's wired into an electrical circuit directly, make sure that a breaker hasn't tripped. You should also inspect the power cable that supplies your machine with electricity to make sure it hasn't been damaged.

    Door Latch

    • If dirt or debris is stopping your dishwasher door from closing properly, you will be unable to start a cycle. Clean the seal around your machine's door and check its door latch for signs of damage. You should also make sure the drawers in your dishwasher are closing properly and are not obstructing your machine's door. If your machine's door latch is broken, you'll need to contact its manufacturer to order a replacement part.

    Water Supply

    • Most modern dishwashers will stop at a certain point during a washing cycle if they are not receiving enough water. Check that your machine's water inlet pipes are properly connected and that the taps that supply them are letting through a strong enough supply of water. You may also find that your machine stops working if its drainage system is blocked.

    Timer or Selector Switch

    • It's possible that your machine's timer or selector switch may be defective if you've ruled out all other possible causes of the malfunction. If this is the case, you will need to contact your dishwasher's manufacturer to arrange delivery and fitting of new hardware.
