GE Quiet Plus Dishwasher Is Not Draining

The GE Quiet Plus dishwasher features a quiet motor, dual pumps and motor, a self-cleaning filtration system and a soil sensor. If the dishwasher is not draining as expected, the issue may be simple, such as overuse of detergent, or more complicated, such as a clogged drain hose. Determining the problem and resolving the situation can often get the dishwasher draining again.
  1. Water in the Tub

    • Note that a small amount of water in the tub after a wash cycle is normal since the water helps keep the seal in the back of the tub wet. If the seal becomes dry, it might crack or split and will not function. As long as the amount of water is low and the water is clean, this water is not indicative of a drainage problem and requires no additional action.

    Detergent Issues

    • Sometimes water may not drain out of a dishwasher if the detergent was used incorrectly. Remember to use automatic dishwasher detergent and not other types of detergent in your dishwasher. GE recommends the use of Cascade brand detergent in its dishwashers. In addition, using too much detergent can cause a drain problem because of too many suds in the tub. Clearing away the suds is necessary before the dishwasher will drain properly again. Let the door stay open for a while to allow the foam dissipate and then add 1 gallon of cold water to the dishwasher. Close the door and either rotate the control dial to a “Drain” cycle or press “Start/Reset” twice on electric keypad models.

    Kitchen Drain

    • Problems with a kitchen drain system can create problems with a dishwasher drain system because the two are linked together. Run your kitchen disposal to clear the sink drain and, if you have an air gap, lift off the cap of the air gap and clean out the hoses. Put the cap back on the air gap and run a drain cycle in the dishwasher to help remove extra water from the tub.

    Drain Hose

    • If all other troubleshooting efforts fail to resolve a drainage problem, disconnect power to the GE dishwasher. Access the drain hose, either under the sink where the drain hose connects to the garbage disposal or the kitchen drain. Disconnect the hose and clear out any obstructions, then reconnect the hose firmly. Contact GE if the dishwasher still does not drain after this process.
