My KitchenAid Detergent Door Is Not Opening

KitchenAid dishwashers are built to clean dishes thoroughly every load, but if the detergent cup doesn't open, dishes don't get clean. The problem may be as simple as improper loading, or it may be the result of a broken part. If you are handy, you can replace the part yourself. Otherwise, call a service technician.
  1. Loading Problems

    • If the dishwasher cup fails to open intermittently, the problem may be the way you are loading it. Avoid placing large items, such as cookie sheets, on the left side of the dishwasher. These items can block the detergent cup so it can't open. Spatulas or spoons protruding from the top rack can also block the detergent cup.

    Timer Mechanism

    • A timer or bi-metal switch opens the detergent cup. If these components wear out or malfunction, the detergent cup won't open properly. The bi-metal switch is fairly inexpensive and simple to replace. A timer is more complicated and expensive. Consider replacing the timer's motor, rather than the entire timer.

    Sticky Detergent Cup

    • On rare occasions, a dishwasher detergent cup fails to open because of debris lodged around the cup. Wash the entire dishwasher door, including the rubber gaskets and detergent cup, to remove any sticky detergent debris. Run a cycle with no dishes or soap to remove any remaining residue. Use only the recommended amount of detergent and try different brands until you find the one you like. Set the hot water heater to at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit, and allow the hot water faucet to run for several minutes before starting the dishwasher.

    Options

    • If you determine that the problem is due to faulty parts, you have a few options while waiting for repairs. Start the dishwasher with the detergent door open. The detergent will fall to the bottom and won't circulate as well through the dishwasher, but dishes will still get reasonably clean. A better option is to start the dishwasher, allow it to fill with water, and then open the door and release the detergent dispenser.
