Garbage Disposal

• The garbage disposal and the kitchen sink are connected to the dishwasher drain in most kitchens, which means that a problem with the kitchen drain likely means a problem with the dishwasher drain. Turn on your kitchen faucet and run water into the sink while starting the garbage disposal for a few minutes to clear the drain. Be aware that the knockout plug, which looks like a hard plastic disc, should have been removed between the dishwasher and the disposal during installation, but if the plug was accidentally left in place, drainage problems will occur. Contact a plumber for assistance.

Air Gap

• Although now less common, many homes have an air gap in the kitchen sink. The air gap is meant to prevent waste water from the dishwasher and waste water from the kitchen drain from mixing, but if the air gap gets clogged, problems can result. Simply lift up the lid, disconnect and flush out the hoses with water, connect the hoses, and cover with the lid.

Suds in the Tub

• The use of excess automatic dishwasher detergent or types of detergent not approved for use with a dishwasher can leave a dishwasher full of water and soap. Open the dishwasher so that air can evaporate some of the soap, then pour in 1 gallon of cold water. Shut the door and press “Start/Reset” two times in quick succession. Let the water drain out of the tub and repeat as needed. Once water has been drained from the hose, do a quick visual inspection to make sure there are no wet labels or food items blocking the pump area in the back of the tub, or clean as needed.

Drain Hose

• Find where the drain hose is connected to the GE dishwasher. Clean the hose out if all other efforts do not restore drainage. After cleaning, connect the drain hose and straighten the hose out for optimal water flow. Contact GE if this effort and all others fail to restore proper draining.
