How to Remove Dishwasher Tracks

The mechanism that allows you to move the rack on your dishwasher in and out of the appliance consists of a number of parts. There are wheels on the rack that slide inside a metal rod. In turn, the rod moves between wheels that sit inside the appliance. The track is the rod attached to the bottom of the dish rack. On the ends of the rod are plastic caps that keep the track in place. The key to removing the track is knowing how to take off the caps.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door of the dishwasher and pull the rack forward just enough so the track comes out.

    • 2

Push the locking tab with a flathead screwdriver. The cap will have one of two styles of locking tabs, either on the end of the cap or toward the front. If the tab is on the end of the cap, push it backward and then twist the cap toward the rack to remove it. If your tab is on the front of the cap, push it away from the rack and pull the cap off the end of the track.

    • 3

Slide the rack forward until it comes off the track. Set the rack aside.

    • 4

Repeat the removal process with the cap on the other end of the track. Grab the track with your hand and pull it out of the dishwasher.
