How to Troubleshoot the Sears Dishwasher Optical Sensor

Sears dishwashers are designed with a number of safety features, including an optical sensor that prevents the appliance from running if the door is not fully closed. This safety feature protects your flooring and carpet from flooding, while protecting your family members from scalding water. But although that safety feature is important, it can malfunction and prevent the dishwasher from running even when the door is tightly closed.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the front door of the Sears dishwasher. Check for any obstructions, dust and dirt around the door latch. An obstruction of buildup of dirt could cause the sensor not to operate properly.

    • 2

Close the door tightly. If the door is open even slightly, the safety features on the Sears dishwasher prevent it from operating. If the unit still does not come on, open the door again and close it as hard as you can.

Clean the entire interior of the dishwasher with a soft cloth and a mild detergent. Clean the area around the sensor thoroughly to remove any built-up dirt. Rinse all of the soap and detergent away from the sensor, then power-cycle the dishwasher.
