Door Will Not Open on a KitchenAid Whisper Quiet Plus

It can be very alarming when the door on your KitchenAid Whisper Quiet Plus dishwasher will not open. The door latches or locks automatically when you shut it. It stays locked throughout the wash, rinse and drying cycles. You may think that the door is broken if you cannot open it. However, you may discover that the door is locked only temporarily.
  1. Power Outage

    • The electrical power supply to your KitchenAid Whisper Quiet Plus dishwasher may shut off in mid-cycle due to a power outage in your area, a blown household fuse or a tripped circuit breaker. The dishwasher door will not open when the machine shuts off in mid-cycle. Check if the power is out in your area. Open your household fuse box or circuit breaker box. Replace any blown fuses or reset the tripped circuit breaker. The dishwasher should resume its cycle momentarily.

    Power Surge

    • The engine on the dishwasher will shut off in mid-cycle if there is a power surge or overload of power supplied to the machine. The dishwasher door will stay latched. The engine will restart automatically within a few minutes. The dishwasher will pick up in whichever cycle was operating when the engine shut off. The dishwasher door will unlatch automatically when the machine has completed the drying cycle.

    Improperly Latched

    • The door on the KitchenAid Whisper Quiet Plus dishwasher must be shut completely for it to latch automatically. The door may not open properly if it has been shut only partway. The latch mechanism may catch only partway, making it impossible to open the door. Push the door firmly shut until you hear the latch catch. Lift up on the door latch to free it from the door frame, and then open the door.

    Considerations

    • The dishwasher door and its latch can be damaged if you sit or stand on the door. The door may then not open properly. The dishwasher door should open freely when the machine is off. You should also be able to open the dishwasher door to add dishes before the machine enters into the "Main Wash" cycle. Check that the "Main Wash" cycle light on the control panel is not lit up. Lift the dishwasher door latch. Open the door when the spraying inside the dishwasher stops, and add the dishes.
