Dishwasher Odor Problem

A foul-smelling dishwasher can cause your entire kitchen to smell unpleasant and leave a lingering odor on your dishes. Often the smell is an indicator of a problem with the dishwasher or the way you are using that appliance. Once the cause of the odor has been determined, it often is easy to fix.
  1. Burning Odors

    • A strong burning smell coming from your dishwasher can be a sign of a mechanical problem. For example, a component might be overheating during the drying process and need to be replaced. A burning smell also can be a sign that a piece of plastic, such as a storage container lid or cup, has fallen onto the heating element at the bottom of the dishwasher and begun to melt. Keep in mind that new dishwashers initially have a slight burning or chemical smell because they contain new plastic pieces that must adjust to the heat.

    Rotten Odors

    • Rotten odors are more common than burning odors. If you have hard water, the rotten smell might come from built-up mineral deposits. It also can indicate that the dishwasher's screen or filter has collected a significant amount of food particles. Standing water in the bottom of your dishwasher can cause an odor and also can be a sign of a clogged drainage system or a drainage hose that has been installed improperly.

    Removing Odors

    • Cleaning the filter or screen, unclogging the drain and wiping down the dishwasher can be enough to remove a rotten odor. If you determined that the odor comes from mineral deposits, installing a water softener will help. If a burning smell is not caused by a piece of melted plastic or persists after the first few cycles in a new dishwasher, consult a licensed plumber or electrician to ensure all elements of your dishwasher are functioning properly.

    Preventing Odors

    • To prevent food odors and drain clogs, regularly rinse dishes to remove large food particles before placing them in the dishwasher. Make sure all small plastic items are secure to keep them from falling to the bottom of the dishwasher and melting. Dishwasher baskets, made primarily for baby items, also corral small items. Regularly wipe down the inside of the dishwasher to remove any buildup. Once every couple of months, run the dishwasher empty with a cup of vinegar sitting on the top rack or after sprinkling baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher.
