Disconnecting a Natural Gas Dishwasher

Natural gas dishwashers are not very common, but if you have one and wish to disconnect it, the procedure does not vary much from an electric dishwasher. Gas dishwashers still use electricity but mostly run off gas. Disconnecting the dishwasher allows you to move it and doesn't take too much time.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the gas valve that runs to your dishwasher to the “Off” position.

    • 2

Flip the electrical breaker switch for your dishwasher to the “Off” position to disconnect the power to the dishwasher.

    • 3

Turn the water supply knob that runs to your dishwasher to the “Off” position. The water supply knob is usually found under your kitchen sink.

    • 4

Locate and remove the screws from the kick plate access panel, or grill panel, from the bottom of the front of the dishwasher, using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 5

Unscrew the gas line that runs from the dishwasher to the gas connection line in your home. You may need a wrench to help loosen the connection.

    • 6

Locate the inlet valve connected to the water supply line, and then disconnect the water supply line from the inlet valve. You may need a wrench to loosen the connection or it may be removable by hand. A small amount of water may drip out once you disconnect the line.

    • 7

Locate the screw on the cover of the terminal block cover plate on the junction box and unscrew it, using a Phillips screwdriver. Removing the plate will allow access to the connection wires.

    • 8

Disconnect the cable wires, attached to the junction box, by removing the wire nuts that cover the wire connections. You can unscrew the wire nut by turning it counterclockwise by hand. Once the wires are disconnected, you will see the strain release nut.

    • 9

Loosen the screw that holds the grounding wire in place by using a Phillips screwdriver, and then disconnect the grounding wire. The grounding wire is located next to the cable wires that you disconnected.

    • 10

Unscrew the strain release nut from the junction box by turning it counterclockwise. You may need a flat-head screwdriver to help push the nut counterclockwise.

    • 11

Pull the wires that you disconnected through the back of the junction box.

    • 12

Unscrew the tightening bolt that connects the dishwasher’s drain hose to your garbage disposal, or sink, and then disconnect the drain hose. You should be able to unscrew the tightening bolt by hand.

    • 13

Unscrew the mounting bracket screws along the top of the dishwasher. The mounting bracket screws attach the dishwasher to your countertop. You will need to use a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 14

Lift the dishwasher up, slightly, and screw in the two leveling feet to the bottom front edges of the dishwasher.

    • 15

Scoot the dishwasher out, slowly, toward you and away from the counter. The drainpipe may need to be pushed through the cabinet’s interior wall if it does not slide out with the dishwasher.
