How to Remove a Trap Drain in a Kenmore Dishwasher

Many Kenmore dishwasher models are equipped with a trap over the drain in the interior bottom of the appliance to catch food particles that might otherwise clog the dishwasher's drain hose or the household plumbing. Some Kenmore dishwashers are also built with a secondary trap to filter out grease and hair as well. These parts must be removed from the drain periodically and cleaned so the dishwasher can flush out water properly. Removing the parts takes less than a minute, and no special tools are needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Finish any wash cycle currently in progress, and then release the latch on the Kenmore door to stop the appliance.

    • 2

Open and lower the door to slide the bottom rack over the door.

    • 3

Hold the primary trap by the tab. Twist the trap approximately one-fourth to the left to release the part, which can now be removed.

    • 4

Pull out the corrugated cylinder underneath the trap if your Kenmore model is equipped with a secondary filter.

    • 5

Clean the parts under warm running water in the sink, using a nylon scrub brush and liquid soap. Rinse thoroughly and then reinstall in reverse order.
